Disadvantages of lean management

In my last article I wrote about lean management and that this strategy is a great innovation for many reasons, and one of them is time saving. Well of course this is great, I do less and do get more time to do other things. But on the other hand I feel like I am always under pressure.  In the sense of I have more time for other things, so during the day I do a lot more, in the end I am busy the hole day. And I get this uncomfortable feeling- this will never end- which can lead to burn out (read more about this in Jules post).

From this perspective, I began to search for the disadvantages of lean management. For my essay in Work Business & Society I am reading “The Machine that changed the world” is a report that is written by Daniel T. Jones. I found really interesting disadvantages from the Japanese perspective.

The ZARA display windows

Besides the lot of different interesting facts about ZARA, the most amazing thing for me is that they actually do not have any advertisement. However this is wrong! ZARA indeed does not have any printed advertisement such as posters or brochures, but they promote themselves through their display windows. So how can they be so successful only with a few windows that just show some of their clothes?

ZARA, H&M and MANGO quality check

I read many articles about bad quality of Zara´s clothes, but I couldn´t believe it. Since I myself buy clothes there and I never had quality problem with Zara. So this weekend I decided to go to Mango, H&M and Zara and check the clothes out!

In each store I looked for similar clothes. And I have found them – a black dress, jacket and blouse. Every item I checked for stains, holes and buttons coming out, zipper and stitching.

 An example of Zara’s sustainable production myth

During my very first research on Zara, one of the greatest international companies belonging to Inditex, I found out that 80 per cent of their production is located within Europe. I was very impressed how they can afford to have their facilities so close by and still keep their prices down. Also it made me think that Zara must be more sustainable than their competitors like Gap or H&M. I found it just fantastic that apparently they do not have long transportation routes and keep their ecological footprint small. Continue reading
